Does anyone have DIY ideas to add privacy to our deck?

Our deck faces a public walking trail and the neighbor's backyard. Their house sits much higher up than ours so having a fence won't work. I want to be able to have privacy in our deck so we can sit and have coffee/dinner in the evenings without the neighbors looking in. Does anyone have DIY ideas to add privacy? I am interested in perhaps having a structure that I can add curtains to so I can open and close as needed as opposed to something more permanent. Oh, and BTW, my budget is non-existent :). I'm looking for something that I can attach to the wooden deck perhaps using plumbing pipes and conduits. Has anyone done something of this sort?

If you build a frame with plumbing pipes you could hang pots with flowering plants or add curtains.

You could also use plumbing pipes and hang sheer curtains from them. Use ones that are sheer enough to allow light to pass but still keep your privacy! Or you could take plumbing pipes of different sizes and cut them about 3" (or whatever length you desire or need) and glue them together to make sort of like a trellis. Depending on the diameters of the pipes you use, then there should be enough privacy that still allows you to get light through.

Yes! We did that to our patio in AZ and I loved it. I used conduit pipes and the pipe hangers to attach the pipes to the edge of the patio over hang. If you weren't comfortable using conduit you could also use pvc pipes. I bought the curtain hangers that have the rings on one end and the clips on the other end. I bought the canvas painters drop cloth because it would hold up outside better and dyed them with rit dye to give it a color that matched better. Then cut your drop clothes if you need to and hang them up. It worked perfectly!

This is the only one I could find. It shows how they are tied back when we didn't need the privacy. When I wanted them down I would untie the ribbons and then just slide the rings across the pipe. Hope that helps. Sure makes me miss that patio!
