Choose a pot the is twice the size of the original plant.
Always choose the pot according to the mature size of the plant. You can get plants in those six packs that need to go into huge pots like tomatoes. If you get seeds, a few tell you how big the plants get. Some plants will tell you how big they get, a lot just tell you how far apart to plant them. What all you plan to put in the pot also will dictate the size of the pot. Use a good potting soil. If it seems like the soil is real heavy mix in some peat moss. Don't bury the plant too deep in the soil. You want to tamp down the soil to the level at which it was originally planted. You don't want to have the roots exposed after water compacts the soil. Fertilize as directed with an extended release type appropriate for what you are planting.
Also when moving your plant to your new pot ruffle and loosen the roots on the bottom to help them find the new soil.
