How can you kill bamboo gone wild?

I made the mistake of planting bamboo 15 years ago outside of a barrel. It has taken over my yard on all sides and growing 12 inches high between lawn mowings! It's crazy!
One section of bamboo growing out of a pile of lava rocks...no soil.
First batch chain-sawed down :-)

Same bad idea here. All that can be tried is cutting it all the way down and then use a total vegetation killer, how ever if there is any other plants around it will kill them to.

  • Cut it down and drown and I mean drown in vinegar. Get cleaning vinegar if you can, works a little quicker. May take a number of applications, but vinegar is cheap and not harmful to pets and environment. It will eventually rot out or call in a stump grinder. Down the line when you want to replant you will need a lot of good compost. Be patient and you can make it happen.

I killed 20 foot tall bamboo very successfully in my Texas yard. Here's how. You will need two people. With a pair of garden loppers the first person cuts the banboo stalk to about 3 inches tall. The second person with Roundup and a 2-3" paintbrush has 10 seconds to brush the Roundup on the open "wound". Any longer than that and the plant will seal the wound and the Roundup won't work. This has to be done 1 stalk at a time. The bamboo will try to send out new shoots. As soon as they are tall enough, do the same treatment to them. Keep at it faithfully and your bamboo should all be dead within a couple of month period. At that time you should be able to dig up the plant's underground network and not have to worry about it again. Good luck!

Hi! Someone else suggested using vinegar. I used RoundUp.

If you want to confine it to one area, dig a trench 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep. Cut off any risomes that have crossed or grow into the trench. Stay vigilant. Bamboo is very invasive. If you want to get rid of it completely, dig, dig, dig, pull, curse and dig some more.

Any risomes in the ground will regrow.

maestro vinegar 20%. Acidity ordered on amazon. Pricey, but works, you have to keep cutting the bamboo short as possible. We had 25 foot tall measuring 35 yards wide and 20 yards deep. It was a nightmare. It took about three years to get rid of it.
