Annuals: impatiens in shade, also hostas in shade.

In sun, petunias, calibrochia, geraniums, daisies.you'll find many more at any local nursery.

    Perennials: hostas (shade) daylilies(sun) hydrangea,

    Hibiscus(sun). Plus many more.

I live in WNY and enjoy clematis which is a climber that comes in many colors. It needs a trellis, lamppost or other structure to climb on, and comes back yearly.

Southtowns get much colder weather, and more snow, so be sure you make sure what ever you choose is hardy.

    Plants: hostas, peonies, daisies

    Shrubs: rhododendron, weigela forsythia

trees: flowering apple, pear, crab or lilac, sand cherry, redbud - all fragrant and beautiful in spring.

Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis) has pretty flowers, then berries later on. Beautybush (Kolkwitzia amabilis). Lilacs (syringa vulgaris, but of the named varieties I love Beauty of Moscow) or Korean Lilac, which is a bit smaller (Miss Kim variety).
