Hi Jody! I see painted paneling on HGTV ALL the time these days. It seems to be very acceptable now and always looks terrific. I'd stick with white, personally. I see this "german smear" technique on fireplace and exterior brick and I love it! I'm assuming your f/p is brick? You put putty type "stuff" on sporadically on the brick, so some of it shows. It looks so cool. Also, what about just doing a whitewash on it? That would be simple and really inexpensive. I apologize for not adding a google link for how to do these things, but if you search, you'll find lots of options.
Hi Jody! I agree with Susan, painting paneling now is the new in! I live in an old lake cabin where everything is wood paneling but not the pretty kind in the bedrooms. So in my daughters' bedroom I put 1/4 inch sheet rock right over the paneling and then painted it. In my room I plan on doing a white wash just to lighten it up, that and I hate painting lol!
Our family room is just like your described in our 1960's ranch. We painted our paneling (is now a light yellow), ceilings and beams are white and we painted our fireplace (was white brick but dirty looking) a light beige and screen over the fire is black. Our mantel is oak. Originally our room was so dark and now it is light and airy. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.....even with the grooves in the paneling....you don't even notice them.
We had painted paneling in our family room. It looked very nice. We did find it needed a light sanding and primer as it had a slick coat.
