Suggestions for homeowner upkeep on air conditioners?

Got a Trane last year (still under warrenty), control brain module went blank. Turns out having a clogged drain line will shut the system down, and labor for fixing that is not covered by warranty -it's a regular maintenance item. Now I knew about changing the air filter, I didn't know you had to watch out for drain lines from the air exchange/pump. So what are some helpful tips you as a homeowner have learned the hard way? Help us fellow diy's out!

Also helps to have a maintance agreement with a good company in town to
service your A/C every 3 to 4 months. Specially if you live in a hot area.
