Do I mulch a freshly seeded area or wait till after plants come up?

Have a raised planter with plants growing and just added seeds to areas in between existing plants. Not sure if I can put mulch over seeded area before any seeds sprout.

I would wait until your new plants come up; otherwise, you wasted your time and effort. The mulch will not allow any sunlight to get to your seeds so they'll just lay there like teenagers on a Saturday morning. šŸ˜€ TeresaC

It would be best to wait to allow the seed to germinate.

I've done it both ways and it doesn't seem to trouble the seedlings to come through the mulch. It'll also help keep seeds being dug out by birds and other small animals if they are mulched. I tend to mulch seeds planted more often then not because of that, and it helps keep the soil moist in the texas heat down here. :) good luck on your garden!

Thanks Rebecca, I may try mulching some spots and see which works better. Afterall growing anything , esp. in the heat is trial and error.

It depends on the seeds. If they are delicate they may not be a to push thru the weight of the mulch. I always wait until they have sprouted enough to be above the much level. If you know exactly where the seeds are you can leave a bare area around them. In my veggie garden bean and corn seeds are able to push up, but not things like carrots.

I would mulch around the seeded areas. Some seeds need light to germinate.

Read the back of the seed envelope.

Thanks Marcie, I wish the packets had mentioned anything about mulching.
