Changing the color of your wall paint or paint the dark paneling will surely lighten up any room. Change your curtains from long drapes to light tier curtains or just hang some valances, which will bring in natural light.
How about light colored paint or hang mirrors to reflect light around the room, change your light bulbs to bright Led bulbs which uses less energy and produces less heat or if your budget allows install Led can lights.
You could try a hanging lamp in the darker areas. This may give you what you are looking for.
I agree with Frances Kay Grillo Harrelle. You can paint the walls lighter color. Remove any heavy or dark curtains with lighter ones that let in light or just cover windows with a window film (design idea shown below). There are so many styles to choose from and will fit any size window. Best part easy peasy to put on!
Your lamps can add more light with brighter bulbs.
Fairy lights. Create a couple of small groupings using your favorite decor. Insert fairy lights in bottles, wrap around flower arrangements etc. You can get them in strings of 20 and up and you get battery operated strings. The put off a fair amount of light.

do you have dark window treatments? paint your room white and pit up white sheer curtains
Light colored shades on lamps . None of the crazy twirlybird lights which Mr. Obama said we had to use. I don't know how large your living room is but you will probably need a lot more than two lamps. Overhead lighting is not for a living room and it isn't complementary to women. Tall plants (living not fake) with uplighting at the base is very warm and comfortable. Not bright please, but low light. Put a folding screen in the room and screw a "hanging from the wall light" on it for more interesting light. Many times these are in Moroccan style but I'm sure you can find something you like or convert a candle one to electricity. They have these at TJMaxx and would look great.
If you have windows in the room open the curtains, or expand the window! Paint the room a cream or white color! find some paints and put them in a white flower vaise, get a mirror and put It in a white frame! I hope you like these ideas!
Tourchaire floor lamp in a corner.
I think that this is influenced by a lot of factors, as well as the color of the walls, furniture. But in any case, you can browse Vonn products to find the right lighting solution.
