the only way I have found is a floor scraper
I agree with Bulldog (nice name)! Old linoleum was glued down with a tar based adhesive. A long handle scraper is the best thing to use. Removing the adhesive is another chore.
A heat gun could help loosen the adhesive to make it easier to scrape off.
Scraping it up is usually the only thing that works. One way to make it a little easier is to use a utility knife and cut strips about 1 foot apart. Then you can scrape and roll the strips as you go to make it a little less bulky.
I have removed linoleum from my kitchen and bathroom (2 layers). If it is old, it has the possibility of asbestos. Use a long handle scraper but to remove any residual glue - dilute it with water (mopping, wet towels, etc) and then scrap. I had very good luck with my steam mop and then scraping.
