How can I use pebbles as a kitchen backsplash?

I'm wondering how I can attach smaller smooth stones to my kitchen wall to use as a backsplash. Would it be better with grout or a special glue? Would it be difficult to keep clean?

Grout, no glue or when you decide to change you will need new walls.

Tiles are usually pourous on the back and grout leaches into them a little, so I would advise using a heavy duty glue! Good luck.

I would think you could use the mortar made for walls and then grout after it dries. As long as they are smooth and you seal the grout I don't think it would be harder to keep clean than anything else. Wouldn't it be easier to use the sheets of stones from the tile store?

They have pebble 12" squares in many colors and sizes for sale at Lowes and Home Depot website. They are fastened onto a mesh, apply then just grout. I believe the pebbles are sealed also.

You can purchase a similar product on a net backing, or do what they did and glue your own pebbles on plastic netting. Use tile adhesive to adhere it to the wall then grout it when it's dry.

If you think you might tire of it later, put them (pebbles or pebble sheets) on something like a sheet of MDF, then attach that to the wall. Or hang it from the cabinets via cup hooks.

Thank you for the information! They do sell sheet of them at home improvement stores, but for at least $10-12 a sheet. It adds up quickly, so I was trying to figure out a cheaper, yet solid way to DIY it. I'm not sure that it will be worth all the extr steps though. We'll see. :)

You could cut plywood to the demensions then glue or grout the stones to the plywood leaving some out so you could nail or screw the plywood to your wall making sure you attach to studs. I would find the studs first marking where they need to be on the plywood. It's going to be heavy.
