I bought this small table, pretty gaudy but it will paint nicely, but I don't know the best way to clean the marble without causing damage. Any suggestions? Thank you!! xoxo

  • Start with warm sudsy water and a rag. Marble is stone and it is porous; and you do not want to use chemicals on it. If there are stains, then you can try a variety of things like peroxide for stains. Anything acidic will etch into the marble. Good luck

And thank you Renee...I didn't think about the acidic issue. I just knew that I didn't know. I love the idea of peroxide...it certainly cleans my teeth!! Such smart girls you are!! xoxo

I had a marble topped coffee table ages ago and a cup of Mountain Dew spilled on it - the soda left a 1/4 deep crater in the marble under the cup! Ate right through it :( I don't think I've drank Mountain Dew since LOL! As hard and heavy as marble is, it is actually kinda fragile, so the advice about not using chemicals on it is spot on - there are specific cleaners/polishers for stone available at your local Home Improvement store too if you need to buff out scratches or bring the shine back.

From working at an antique mall, I learned the best way to buff a marble topped table was with car wax. I'm not sure if this will clean the table, but know that the surface comes up very well after a good ol fashioned buff.

Initially, after you clean the marble, do use a good commercial sealer. I reseal my granite and marble twice a year. The Rock Doctor (brand) cleaner works very well to clean both marble and granite. They also make a polish that I use monthly that protects the stone. Then clean and polish as needed and always use coasters under glasses! (I actually love your table as it is! Very elegant)
