How do people qualify to get on the diy shows? I'm curious!

I would love to know too! Unfortunately I live in Miami and we have way too many building codes/permits and its such a process that those shows never come down here
My only guess is that Ft. Lauderdale has more or less the same.
I know that a lot of the people on HGTV were spotted through their blogs first. They had a huge following. I remember hearing that one show host sent a tape in.
Just apply! Every show has info on how to do so on their parent website.
I am currently a Hometalk Live host. If you mean being a host on Hometalk Live - you can apply here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12WsFIcfHlnXr5PVzB7i8Z-CRCHUHjyh5WME8-JPPYqU/viewform?edit_requested=true
If you are referring to being the host of a show, I think having an engaging personality and a nice approachable appearance (think: Property Brothers) works and then just getting attention like someone said, on YouTube or a blog. If you mean how can you have a host renovate your home? You can email HGTV via email to ask about specific shows. ( http://www.hgtv.com/about-us ). I remember some great shows on tv that were very creative: "Design On A Dime,"
"That's Clever," "Decorating Cents" and many that I can't remember now! It was not about renovations but décor, crafts, fun projects. Now its all the same. Flipping, flopping, construction, mega money, million dollar houses and hosts trying to sell their own brand of furniture, etc.
