I changed out old bulbs awhile back from 60W and some 75W all to LED 12W. You can get LED in soft, neutral and cool. Cool is very bright!
I hope this helps you out
Your lamp is rated for a maximum of 60 watt incandescent bulb. That is because of the wiring, flammability of shade if a table lamp and the heat incandescent bulbs give off. LED bulbs produce barely any heat, come in different brightness, last much longer, and of course use much less energy than the incandescent. You should stick to the bulb rating of your lamp and get a comparable LED. You can go up one level without any problem. Until manufacturers of lamps and light fixtures change the ratings or add an LED rating.
A watt is the amount of energy used to produce a certain amount of light brigjtness (lumens). So yes you can get bulbs that use any amount of energy up to 60 watts. But it you might get it too bright if you are using led since they require much less energy. So refer to the lumens on the box to choose your bulb.
I was as confused as you are and spent a LOT of time looking at bulbs at Lowe's and Home Depot. Sylvania makes a light bulb that is a 60w replacement using 9w and 800 lumens. I tend to like bright light, especially in the kitchen, so purchased those with a 5000k (very bright) rating. These bulbs stay cool and work well in a closed ceiling fixture.
