You must first break up the soil so that the roots can spread then add some cow manure and I also add Miracle Grow vegetable soil mix all together tilling the soil well and then plant..Compost is also very good..
If you are using manure ,or compost, till everything pretty good and add fertilizer. A bit of peat moss can be good for drainage.
Rototill,amend with garden soil for vegetables.That has all the amendments in it.
I use miracle grow and mix half native dirt with half miracle grow.
When I have to add soil to my veggie garden I till in half top soil and half peat moss with a little mulch. I make sure to fertilize it afterwards.
