went to the site mentioned above... a lot of work in all that... takes quite a while and failure odds are great. what i have done is just dig around base of the lilac where the new suckers are growing and replant. w a little food and water, you'll have a new tiny bush. best to do while they are blooming so energy is going in to the blooms and not into the root. but i have done them both ways before.
its how my mother got a whole hedge along her fence line over years.
