I'm on a budget like you, but I am a professional painter, so I gear myself to painting cabinets. I've painted cabinets in quite a few of my own homes, besides others, so I know for a fact that they have worn very well. But I also paint with longevity in mind. Here's the tricks of what I do so they wear and last:
I. I do prime. In 2 of the houses I have not taken off the doors to paint (a bit lazy on my part), so I take a little artists brush and paint around those.
2. I do multiple coats of a enamel paint.
3. I sand between coats so they are smooth to the touch
4. I put a verathane or polyeurathane on at the end. This is what help with keeping them clean.
I do my painting over time, since I work a lot. Doing it all at once would never get done. Currently, my kitchen is about 1/3 painted, but I don't mind. I am searching garage sale for handles to put on. My kitchen is going to get a whole new look for under $50! I like that number!
Have fun whatever you choose!
First, take off all the knobs and handles and give the doors and frames a good Scrubbing with Dawn Dish soap or other cleaner to rid the cabinets of any grease or dirt.. You should have seen the ones I helped scrub in a House that our Church uses as a Rental.. I think there was at least a 1/4 inch of grease on and in the cupboards - I used Steel wool scrubbing pads and Awesome cleaner from the dollar store along with Dawn dish soap - it took alot of Elbow Grease and effort to get them clean., Rinse well and wipe dry with old towels. let air dry for a Day.. Do you want to paint them ? ? ? or give them a darker look with Stain?? if you have a small door you can remove, then use the inside of the door as your guinea pig and stain half and paint half just to see what might look the best.... You can get samples at any large builder's Supply like Lowes or Home Depot or if you know a builder or carpenter friend they might have some left over stain or paints you could try..? .. My Mom used Pecan stain on her Oak Doors and its looks nice and you can still see the Grain of the Wood.. I am a Real wood Fan.. Hope this helps. plus just changing the knobs and handles could change the look too.. or adding some trim on the doors...
Thank you so much for your response. Can you use chalk paint on kitchen cabinets?
I used Nuvo cabinet paint in coconut (an off-white) and painted my all wood cabinets in a weekend. I just had to clean them first. I posted about it if you look at my projects.
Hello, yes you can use chalk paint on cabinets just make sure you do your prep work first. Then use wax for the top coat it is SUPER durable and cleans easily, that is the best finish for chalk paint. Good luck!
