If the rough walls have a very deep texture, paneling might be the answer. Although some paneling seems outdated, other styles have a more current look. Beadboard paneling is appropriate in almost any casual setting, and comes in plain white and stainable wood grain. You can paint either style. Wider, interlocking tongue-and-groove paneling is available in many woods, including cedar, poplar and pine. For a more formal area, wainscoting-style wall paneling with thick, elaborate wood trim molding gives you a striking way to cover rough walls.
