How to revamp three tiered cake cooling rack?

I just bought this beautiful antique cake cooling rack. It however has many scratches and needs to be redone. They are not deep scratches so could be chalk painted. I don't know if that's the way to go. Here's a picture of it.

What a great piece! I would love to see some chalk paint on there- I think it'll look fabulous! You can add some stenciling as well to make it really special.

All depends on if you want to retain it's antique value and how much work you want to put in to it. Any changes and you may lose value. Chalk paint would be nice or you could sand it completely down to bare wood and try Unicorn Spit gel stain

I refinished an old wooden radio for my father-in-law using Minwax finishes. We never intended to sell it so I was not concerned about sanding, altering the piece and decreasing its value. You could gently sand where the scratches and the entire piece. Then, stain with a darker colour. Minwax sells a great product called Antique Oil. Once the stain has dried, follow the directions and coat with the oil. (2 coats are recommended). They also have a product called Antique Refinisher that will get rid of the old varnish If you don't want to sand anything. It's not as messy as other strippers. You need to use both these products in a well ventilated area. Finally, I suggest buying a detail marker in gold to add a little glam around the edges. Michael's and most hardware stores carry them. Practice your technique first because mistakes are difficult to remove. Best of luck.

It is darling! It really does not appear to be an antique, from the machine turnings and finish, though, so you should feel comfortable is doing what you wish. It could be used for so many things. :)

Sand any rough spots..Clean it good with a Spray cleaner or Vinegar and water, Rinse and let dry, ..If you want to change the look entirely try spray paint in Bronze or Pewter or any color you want.. depends on what room you want to use it in... and what you want to use it for... Show us a picture when you get it refinished.. I like the ideas above about using Stain. too.

I have a truly antique one of these. My mother, who purchased it in the 1950's in England, said it was for serving 'tea'. Each level would hold a different serving plate of food.
