Insulation type spray or material on sub-floor before padding & Carpet

Is there spray or any type of material that goes on the sub-floor that would provide an insulating effective? (We are getting new carpet and 2 rooms of current carpet pulled up to change to hardwood.) the 1st floor area is cold from what feels like a draft coming up from the crawlspace.

The wood should be insulation enough. But there is a spray foam that can be put in cracks to seal the are of letting in the cold. We took down a banister in the kitchen and you could see the ground below. Hubby sealed the entire kitchen before the installers got there with cabinets, etc. That is the warmest room in the house!

@Jeanette S Thank you. Figured best to ask and know BEFORE we ask carpet stores...... assume carpet installers SHOULD know this, but hate to get bad info from them and AFTER installation, find we could have done something low cost and efficient! have a great day!

Before we laid our laminate floor that had pad attached over plywood subfloor, we rolled out roof tar paper (cheaper than anything for floors) we ran it up walls 1-2" to be covered by molding (so no drafts at edge of room) and then just overlapped pieces 2-3" as we were laying. It helped considerably in stopping any drafts and towards insulating floors. We are in a doublewide trailer so have the same effects as a crawl space with drafts.

@Cynthia E Thank you for that tip! I'll ask the carpet companies about that too!
  • What you are most likely missing is a vapor barrier on the ground underneath the home in the crawlspace and insulation that should be between the floor joists. After time the insulation can fall down or "disappear" causing the floor to be cold. I would also like to put my 2cents in worth about carpet pads. Go the extra and get the better pad! Your carpet will last longer and it is so much better to walk on. I have always used the better pad and my carpet (builders grade too) which was installed 5 1/2 years ago still is wearing great despite laying it while doing renovations on the house. Carpet is insulation so it will help.

    • @Jim G I also caulk around the windows and the trim along the floor. It is amazing how much airflow comes through and around the trim on doors and windows. Be careful of the spray foam~it is awesome stuff but a little will go along way and I found do it on a warm day because on cool days it expands slower so you think you didn't squirt enough LOL Oh what a mess that was. good luck PS I have to redo under the house this spring. Ugh...
