How about painting them? Or mod podge them? I still have one left that my mom made probably 30 or more years ago.
You can use the cool marble paint trick using nail polish. Drop lots of nail polish into a bowl of room temperature water. Swirl it around using a toothpick and then dip your eggs in to get a cool marble design.

Mod podge some really cool papers on... or even gift tissue paper. If you're talented with a Dremel tool you could cut out a really cool pattern
