Yes, I think groundcover may be the way to go. I would try a sedum as they are tough and reseed themselves and will come back on their own in the spring and can take a beating. Do not be overwhelmed, it is nature and nature is not perfect and manicured. You have some awesome trees to be thankful for, and it is always better to work with nature than against it.
Basically there is no care for sedum.creeping sedum will give you the color and fill you are looking to achieve.If they start to overcrowd they are very easy to pull out.
Hostas and Day Lillies are a beautiful option. Best of all, they are prolific and can be split up in the fall and used in other areas or shared with your friends.
