I removed the dishwasher in my 1950s home because I needed storage space -now I have a gaping opening and don't know what to do next.

  • Build or buy a cart that fits the dimensions of the space. I would allow room to add wheels or casters on the bottom for easy access. Just pull it out when you need to get your stored items.

I built a frame from 2 x 2s, and took the doors off the cabinent above frig and put them on the lower cabinent.... fit perfectly. Use the over the frig cabinent now I don't have doors cause its easier to get too.

The space should fit a standard 24" base cabinet perfectly. I have always gone the other direction, removing a cabinet to install a dish washer, but it only seems reasonable that it would work fine in reverse. Your biggest problem will be matching the style of your existing cabinets.

Determine what it is that you want to store in that space. You could make it open shelving that pulls out - this would avoid trying to match cabinet styles.
