I put a piece of plywood, painted smooth , over the opening and put my serger on it

If you haven't found a use for it yet that you are satisfied with, as it is partially open on the inside it would lend itself well to be used as a vanity base for a vessel sink. It would look perfect if you are going for a country French/shabby chic decor, especially in a powder room.
