It's huge with quartz rock. I'm so afraid to tear it out, because I don't know what's behind the rock, & what to do after it's gone. The garage is on the other side.... See more
A nice bright print tile would be nice where the tan tiles are now.
How about copying this project? It's so similar to the style of your fireplace.

You could use Unicorn SPiT! It works on just about any surface and the best part is if you mess up or do not like the look then it is water soluble unless you have a top coat on! It is really popular on Hometalk so do a search for Unicorn SPiT on here or go to their Facebook group for ideas and tips!

I would tile the inner square with a pop of color or Mexican tiles.
You could resurfce the current stone with another . Keep color scheme to match other parts of house. Mexican tile would really be nice and bright but does your home have a southwest feel?
Thanks for all of your suggestions. I might actually try the Spit. Never used that before.
Add new tile or paint the entire fireplace for a more updated look:

A suggestion, if you choose Unicorn Spit, try it on a practice piece of marble if you can and see how you like it. Even though it sounds like a good water soluble idea, practice before committing.
