We had a "worm bed" growing up and we threw literally everything in it. It was constructed from 4 large sheets of tin as the walls, no bottom , no top. This really wasn't an issue as we had a large lot and it was in the back corner . All food scraps, leaves , fallen branches , grass cuttings, etc. went into the worm bed. We had the biggest night crawlers you've ever seen and it was fun to dig them out with my grandpa.

They need to be in a warm environment - but no lower than 40 degrees and no higher than 80 degrees. Get 2 big plastic tubs. Drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of one tub.It will sit inside the undrilled tub. Shred newspapers, cardboard, and add some dead leaves and several scoops of top soil. Wet everything and wring it out so that it is damp and not soaking. Don't use magazines or other colored paper. Black newspaper ink is made from soy beans so it won't hurt the worms but colored ink will hurt them. Fill the bin about 3/4 full. Keep the bedding fluffed up so air can get into the bedding. Go to the local bait shop and choose about three or four containers of worms. Add them to the bedding. You will have to feed them daily because they eat a lot. Add kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, ground egg shells. No meat products! If the bin gets stinky or attracts flies, you are feeding too much! Put the food in one spot and the worms will come to it. When the bin is nearly full transfer the worms to a new bin by sifting them from the compost. Use the compost in the garden!
