My hard wood floors squeak!

My living room and dining room floors squeak so bad that when we are in the downstairs family room and someone walks in the dining room or living room upstairs you hold your breath because it sounds like the wood is splifting and the person will fall through. We did open up the vents between floors this past winter so the heat could be felt in the family room
