Can you put new flooring on top of linoleum?

we have remodeled most of the new home and have been putting off deciding about our kitchen floor. I just hate tearing up the linoleum and wondered if we could put any flooring on it without having to remove the old.

A floating laminate floor. Self stick tiles. Self stick flooring strips that looks like wood. Make sure the floor is clean and dry.

That depends if the floor is level

  • If you are wanting to put ceramic or stone tile, vinyl or laminate flooring, tile or sheet linoleum, or hardwood planks. you can install these over existing linoleum PROVIDED the existing linoleum has been securely glued to the subfloor. It cannot have bubbles or large tears because any of the above materials must have a secure surface to adhere to.

If you want to use ceramic or stone you need to put down cement board over the linoleum. Cannot put ceramic over linoleum. The wood subfloor and linoleum will "move" the grout and tile can crack.

I got one of those floating laminate slate floors put right over the 70s awful asbestos lino floors. Looks great and easy to care for.

Yes, you can. Fill in any area that has a chipped area with a concrete patch product. Use an underlayment and then you can use luxury vinyl tile, laminate, or even engineered floating wood floor. Those are the easiest options.
