What a brilliant idea! Use textured rubber feet on the bottoms to keep them from sliding on the book shelf. If they are too lightweight try screwing some heavy iron washers on the bottom, then add the rubber feet to the washers to prevent scratching.

I just did this with 2 beautiful corbels. I chalk painted them, then sanded lightly. I added felt circles as buffers for shelf contact safety. I pushed a set of books against the shelf and used one to hold them upright. I did the same on the opposite shelf.
