Margaret, you did not mention what state you live in? How about giving more details about the condition of your counters and what are they made of?
There are many "free" home improvement assistance programs throughout the USA with volunteers happy to assist you in fixing up your house. Everybody needs a little help now and then... and it would be fun to share your projects with someone who loves doing it. And, on top of all that, you learn something new. What do you say?
Take a look at Giani Granite. It's a paint-on product intended for sad old countertops and is lightyears less expensive than new ones and will hold up better than regular paint or Contac paper.

The easiest and inexpensive way it to use oil base paint. You can even create a marble effect by using 2 or 3 colors. This is time consuming but fun to do. After the painting you will need to varnish it (oil base). I have done 2 different counter tops like this and they are gorgeous. I put 4 coats of varnish on the counter tops - lightly sand between coats. Enjoy and have fun!
