What can I do in my small backyard?

I live in a duplex and have a small yard and tons of weeds in it. How can make it a place to sit with the kids? I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money but definitely willing to spend some to make it a place we can enjoy. My kids are 2yrs and 5yrs. I'm home during the days and would like to spend summer in my backyard
