since you have existing shelves, I would suggest fabric cubes. You can make your own by covering cardboard boxes (free at grocery stores or ask someone who works at an office to save you paper ream boxes with lids) with fabric.
If you like a farmhouse look you could see if you could find old crates to use on the shelving, or buy cheap bins from the dollar store and spray paint them silver and add little chalkboard labeled tags on them (you can make these or buy them) to organize everything out of sight on the shelves.
Really good ideas already. I love bins, but, also use an old hutch for storage. I'm going to paint it in the near future, but, it holds a ton of stuff!
I also have purchased baskets at second hand stores and use those to organize things on shelves.
