My pull down stairs hits my light fixture because it was mounted to close to the light fixture. The light fixture actually touches the trim around the staircase.

Will you have enough clearance for the stairs to open when it is reversed? The pull down stairs is one whole assembly that is mounted from the attic to a frame assembly. You would need to be in the attic. Have a helper down where the the stairs are. Locate nails or screws that hold the assembly in the opening. Cut through the nails with a reciprocating saw or unscrew the screws holding the unit. Lift the unit (it will be heavy) and turn it around. Have the helper see if the unit is centered in the opening. Shim if needed. Nail or screw the unit to the frame in the corners first. Have the helper pull the stairs down so they open properly. Finish nailing or screwing all around. May just be easier to move the electrical box for the light fixture and sealing the hole.

Yeah I think I would look for a low profile LED light fixture to replace existing one.

What about going to a resessed light fixture.

I had the same problem......I bought a new fixture with less of a projection. Mine was a wall sconce. A new fixture would be cheaper than going through all of that construction and mess !

  • I would change the light fixture or move the light fixture - less work and mess than the stairs.
