How to get a bird out that is stuck in my chimney?

I've been hearing noises in my chimney for awhile. Well today I heard a bird sqwacking quite loudly and looked out the sliding glass door right next to the fireplace and realized the sound is coming from the fireplace! I think it's sitting on the damper. Besides having a chimney guy come out and birdproof the top, how do I get the poor bird out?

Poor bird, and poor you! I haven't had this experience, but check this out - there is a really good method here, with a box: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/bird-out-fireplace-chimney-68987.html

Given the time of year, I'm pretty sure you have a momma bird that has made a nest on that damper. The minute you interfere , mom will abandon the nest completely.

My suggestion... wait it out for a month or so, the mom and chics will all fly the coop eventually. When they do, open the damper and the nest should fall into the fire place... if it doesn't, then it's time to call a pro. If you start a fire, you run the risk of a chimney fire.

Could be chimney drifts. They nest in chimneys. You may see them flying in and out of the chimney usually late in the evening. If you can look up the chimney, you may see the semicircular nests adhered to the inner wall of the chimney. They are protected by federal law so no reputable chimney service will disturb them while nesting. (Huge fines.) After the nestlings leave the nest, a service will remove the nest. To prevent repopulation, install a chimney cap.
