Do plants have different fertilizing needs in terms of timing?

I fertilize all my garden in spring and end of summer. zuchinnis do great all summer, but tomatoes start big then size reduces considerably.

Could it be more to do with pruning than fertilizing? Are your tomato plants pretty bushy? If so, they could be focusing a lot of energy on limbs and leaves instead of fruit making. http://thekitchengarten.com/pruning-tomatoes-like-pro/
