How do I improve drainage in my yard?

My yard turns into a swamp every time it rains. We're lower than the street and the neighbors so a French drain can't drain the water out if it's installed. Need something that can drain where we are.

I had a backyard in Oklahoma years ago that looked just like that. It had a rock wall running around the whole thing that kept the water in the yard instead of draining into the street. We fixed it by digging a three foot deep trench across the entire yard and under the rock wall. We filled the trench with rocks and then covered the last six inches or so with dirt. Took care of the problem entirely and within a year you couldn't even see it or tell it was there.

You're right. That ditch is called a 'french drain'. Even without a wall, a french drain at the EDGE of your property line is the answer that lasts the longest. You might do a second one about 5 feet before your yard reaches the house. Depends on how big your property is.

You could dig a system of drainage ditches leading to a pit with a sump pump. You would need a legal location where the discharged water could flow so.... yeah, I agree with Tamaramudd.
