Can you put old barn wood over a brick woodburning fireplace?

I have a wood burning fireplace that has an open hearth with a screen and glass door out of brass that I want to remove. The brick is floor to ceiling and is blonde bricks. I don't like it. I wondered if I could cover the entire brick with old barn wood floor to ceiling? Would I have to do something around the opening of the fireplace? I don't want the outside of the fireplace to catch fire.
