Quick and gritty? A sheet of plywood laid over milk crates, or even one of the "Cube stacks" turned on its side (Those shelving units designed to hold those bins) A sheet of sturdy plywood with short wooden feet (they sell them at Walmart) added. Can be painted/stained to any thing you would like.
Wood pallets. Stacked up one or two high, it is the perfect height. For bigger beds, combine two across together with screws and hardware. You may have room left around the sides of the mattress that can be used as a nightstand. Sand, paint, stain, leave as is. Free for the pallets. Here 2 pics:
I had a few extra Doors sitting in my garage. I sanded them, painted them (get creative) according to the colors your bedroom is & paint them! Some doors have different shape squares, so you can always "mix & match and even use fabrics such as leather, suede, etc. Just do what strike your fancy. You can the add contrasting pillows & sometimes an inexpensive throw blanket at the end! Have fun getting creative...nothing is ever wrong!! :-)
