I would hate to remove a source of water. I would try to ge the drain connected to a real drain and then you could put in a sink.
Your best bet is to call a plumber and ask for suggestions and an estimate. If it's too expensive, you don't have to go ahead with the work.
i think i would stand in a galvanized wash tub while i showered. catch the water and then drain vie sump pump. use a hula hoop to support the shower curtain.
