How to protect the brass nail heads when painting fabric of chairs?

I am about to fabric paint my upholstered bar chairs. How do I protect the brass nail heads on the seat cushions from paint?

I haven't tried it myself but seems like I've read people use Vaseline to protect small items from being painted?
That's interesting. Will also try that.
I have used clear nail polish to slow the speed of tarnish. Not sure if the new paint will affect it. Check the internet.
Can't you remove the nail heads?
