Hi Kathy! Do you have a photo of what you'd like to do?

It really is just something you need to aquire the feel for. My best advice is to get some scrap wood or dry wall and mix up a batch of mud. Play around with it and different trowels. It really is like frosting a cake. Anything you can do with frosting and a spatula you can do with mud and a trowel.

Google "Knockdown Texture" for more info. Basically, you use pre-mixed joint compound, roll it onto your walls in small sections using a heavily textured roller, wait a few minutes for it to dry slightly, then scrape it lightly with a wide flat scraper to "knock down" the bumps. It gives a beautiful finisih to your walls, you can paint right over it, It hides imperfections, etc.
