You will need to attach lath to the stucco. There are several methods depending on the tools you have if block is under the stucco. Your local building supply will be your best resource. If stucco over frame hit the studs with construction screws or nails. It is best to use alum nails to attach the siding itself.( at least I think so)- you have not specified what material you will be using. Alum will not rust and bleed down the siding.
