A few years ago I wanted to paint my kitchen cabinets. This is the advice I was given from a painter... Wash down the cabinets with a TSP product to remove any grime, grease, or finger oils. Scrub them down further with a liquid sander/ deglosser product. Then paint two thin coats of primer, followed by of of choice
I am in the middle of painting my kitchen right now. I am doing exactly what Kim mentioned above. TSP, then deglosser, then primer. I am going from 1990's oak to pure white, and using Kitchen and Bath quality paint. It is covering, but it is taking three coats.
