Everything will grow near and on walk way. Solution is to put in borders of what ever material you choose.
What kind of light does the area get? Mine faces north and has mature trees so is shady once the trees leaf out. I have hostas and once well established they are no fuss plants that seem to love being ignored once mature. I very rarely water mine, although until they are mature and filled in with the leaves covering the soil well, I do water them since the ground does dry out quicker in the new bed.
