I have two whiskey barrels on my deck and I throw kitchen scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, no meat, into them over the winter. Before planting, I layer peat moss, ashes, potting soil and a little worm castings with the compost that's in the barrel and my tomatoes are amazing. Use a cage to attach them to and then twine to keep tying them to the railing or sheperd hooks as they grow. They get very big!

From my personal experience the 'topsy turvy' planters yielded no tomatoes for us. It was a big flop. We live in west Texas.
