If you want it to withstand the outdoors I'd recommend a waterproof sealer to finish the project.

Personally, though I have used chalk paint on indoor upholstery, I wouldn't recommend homemade chalk paint for outdoor fabric for durability reasons and because the entire point of chalk paint is to get that matte, distressed, waxed finish -- and I don't think wax would hold up on an outdoor umbrella for very long -- think of the problems in summer heat
