How to finish off a basement wall

We bought a house with a partially finished basement. The exterior front wall has 3 cinder blocks below grade and the rest of the wall was insulated and finished. The problem is the wall and the cinder blocks are flush to one another so the wall has exposed cinder block, how can I finish it without doing wainscoting?

we lived in an older home when our boys were small and needed a playroom for them. The walls in the basement were very rough uneven concrete. So the wall coming down the stairs we paired with a stucco paint. Was rough if you rubbed your hand on it , but there were no finger prints. On another wall we ran the carpet right up the wall. The rest we studied and drywalled. Got loads of compliments on that room when we sold the house.
