Stenciled Air Dry Clay Fish

We are sharing a cute project for summer or coastal decor. These fish are very easy and fun to make. Make a wall hanging or attach them to a base for display on a shelf. Frame them or just attach a hanger on the back and hang them like a plaque.
I found a free fish template on line just by searching 'free fish template' on google. I printed and cut it out to use for this project.
I rolled out air dry clay large enough for my template and cut out the fish using a butter knife.
I laid the clay fish on a sheet of wax paper to dry. It took several days for the fish to fully dry. You can see in the above photo that the fish have rough edges and some imperfections.
After they were fully dried, I used a fine grit (220) sand paper to lightly sand the edges and smooth them out. It only took a few minutes to clean them up. I used a damp paper towel to remove the dust from sanding.
We decorated our fish with stencils, but be creative and decorate them any way you want to fit your own decor. I put a dab of each paint color I was using on a piece of cardboard. I used standard craft paint. I used wooden foam tipped paint stamps to apply the color. Dab a little paint on the end, and then dot on the cardboard or piece of scrap paper to remove color. You don't want a lot of paint on the tip when stenciling.
Here is one of the stenciled fish! This was quick and easy to do and the paint dried quickly.
I used a piece of driftwood and white cord to make a hanger for the fish. I also added wooden beads that were painted blue to add more interest.
I used picture hanging screws that I hand screwed into the top of the driftwood and created a hanger with the white cord.
I made a quick base with three pieces of a dowel rod that were glued together.

Note: Be sure to use a strong glue. We used E6000 glue for the hanger and to attach the fish to a base.
I used a smaller piece of driftwood as another base. These simple bases are great for displaying a fish on a shelf.
