Gardening in Tubs- is it a good idea?

Before I rush out after the 4th of July and but a plethora of tubs (normally used for icing down canned drinks), has anybody had any raving success vegetable gardening this way. I was very impressed by a video of 12 lbs of potatoes being yielded but my question is, is this attainable or is there some more I am not aware of. Purchasing the tubs and soil and additives can be expensive. I don't want to spend $300. for a $10.00 yield. I will say I have a stunning squash plant coming along in one. I would rather have the facts from kindred hearts than a YouTube from professionals.

Growing Potatoes in tubs is problematic. I have had no success, however planting something you like and that is adaptable to container gardening is doable. Potatoes are cheap, but artisan lettuces and tomatoes are not. Even zucchini and yellow squash are pricey. These grow well in containers, provided they have adequate drainage. This means punching a bunch of holes in the bottoms of your tubs. Good luck!

Thank you. I didn't mention but I am trying my hand at pickling cukes grown in a straw bale. They're perfect size for one and the taste seems better. One seems to be doing splendidly. I may try one tub of potatoes just to see. Your advice being they aren't that expensive is correct. My biggest problem is, if I did have a bumper crop, how would I store them?

Cool, dark place. Cellar or corner of a basement. Good luck!
