I've done some research on repelling "rodents," and I use peppermint oil. You can douse a few cotton balls or mix with water and mist the plants.

I fill the gaps between plants with small rocks, about egg size or larger. As the plants grow, you won't be able to see the rocks. I've also used broken pieces of pottery. I've tried MANY deterrents and the rocks seem to be the most effective.
