Why not? Some people find it fun and relaxing. Some want the satisfaction of doing themselves. Some want to save money. Some a combination of any of these things. Not everyone has the money to "point and pay" and others like the artistic expression.
I agree with Naomie! Save money, knowing how it was done, satisfaction of doing it the way you want, learning how to do things and how it's done. Amaze friends and family of you capabilities and possibly helping them out.
Its so much fun, exercise, therapy, save money and just an over all good feeling to say, "I did it all by myself". I absolutely love creating My DIY talents even when I make a mess. I just take it apart and start all over with something new. I always come out with something.
All of this above, and some more : sometimes you don't find that special thing in the shops because the item you are looking for is not "trendy" thus not sold or your item has a special size, and also very important : re-use, re-cycle re-purpose and not throwing away.
